It is My Duty as a Christian

"President Bush said he was ‘troubled’ by gay people getting married in San Francisco. He said on important issues like this the people should make the decision, not judges. Unless of course we’re choosing a president, then he prefers judges.” —Jay Leno

It is my duty as a Christian. Whenever I hear those words, I send up a short prayer.  Lord, save us from your followers. I had to pray this once again the other day while having a conversation with a woman I know.

w:  “It is my duty as a Christian to pass any laws necessary to put a person on the right track.”

eV:  “So you don’t believe in religious freedom?”

w:  “I didn’t say that.”

eV:  “But you just said that you would pass any laws necessary...”

w:  “People are free to believe what they wish.”

eV:  “But if you were to pass any laws necessary - they aren’t given the liberty to live as they believe.”

This conversation was in the context of gay marriage.  I, like the rest of the sane world, don’t see why this is such an issue.

Let’s bypass the whole gay issue for a moment and look at marriage itself.

Marriage is an institution ordained by God. Ok.  Fine.  If marriage is a sacred institution, then the government has no business stating who can be married and who can’t - that is God’s job.  In this case, let the church issue a certificate, not the government.

Marriage is an institution of the government, therefore a couple must have a license. Ok.  Fine.  If this is the case, then the church shouldn’t be involved.

Repeat after me:  “Separation.  Of. Church. And. State.”

Either way you look at the issue - as a Bible-Thumper - Or Not - gay marriage shouldn’t be a problem.  If marriage is a sacred God thing, a gay couple would either:  A. Not care or B. Belong to a church that accepts homosexuality (which would be an issue within the Christian community - not the whole fucking world.) In the case of marriage being a governmental institution - it isn’t a God issue.  It is simply a legal agreement between two people, and last time I checked our government was founded on the idea of equal rights.

However, the Christian community (as a whole) has the it’s my duty as a Christian mentality and wants convince the world that the U.S. is a Christian nation and therefore should enact laws supporting Christian beliefs.  Where in the United States Constitution or Declaration of Independence does it say that?  Oh wait.  IT DOESN’T.  Yes, there were Christians among our country’s forefathers, but remember Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Pain, and Thomas Jefferson?  Guess what fucktard?  They weren’t Christians!

*Note:  I am not trying to bash the Christian faith, just those self-righteous, Bible-Thumping Fuckwads that scream “God hates gays” into their megaphones on the street by Wal*Mart.  God doesn’t hate, you morons.

And to think I have Christian friends who wonder why I don’t claim to be a part of their little club when I believe in Christ.  Go figure.
